Given - that sounds about right, given my limited experience - more substantial, punchier. TedEH - that's a forum I run, actually, and while we mostly talk about carbon fiber bikes these days, from the little music we DO still talk about, you might like the community. You can do a lot with those mics so have fun! The fact you have a stereo pair of multipattern microphones means you can try stereo patterns like Blumlien and Mid-Side as well as spaced Omni's and ORTF. Your microphones are quite a bit better and different than what I had and as you have discovered, they make recording good sounds much much easier. I set them up un X/Y pattern, played something quick and easy, listened back and finally heard a proper classical guitar recording (that I made) playing back through my monitors. I knew what I had to do and with the confirmation of a particular recording website subforum I bought an Apogee Duet 2 and a stereo pair of sE1a's (SDC's). People kept saying "you need to just continue experimenting with the mic position" or "try aiming the mic at a 45 degree angle pointed at the 12th-14th fret." Oddly enough, the bad advice I was getting was coming from "real" people, not internet forums. My first microphone was an AKG C430 and I was going to use it to record classical guitar through my Eleven Rack Mic Preamp. Whether it is a clean, transparent preamp or a colored, tube preamp, they will both add a certain "substantive weight" to the source you are recording. If you want an additional adjective, I found my outboard stereo preamp gives the everything more "weight." If I had to compare it to art, onboard preamps are watercolor paintings while outboard preamps are acrylic paintings. I've barely gotten a feel for them (I spent most of my time experimenting with the BAE with mics I already own for a familiar reference) but right off the bat, a hastily positioned stereo pair was one of the best recordings of my acoustic I've ever managed.Ĭlick to expand.Cool stuff! Describing what a microphone preamp sounds like is no easy task once you go beyond "good" and "bad," which in themselves mean little. This is way sweeter and more open sounding. So far I'm very impressed - the AKG C3000a I've been using before is nice, but suddenly I get why it has a reputation for a harsh, spiky high end. As a bonus, I was able to get a stereo pair for about the cost of a single C414. The SE4400a's are a modern take on an older brass capsule AKG C414 design and are supposed to be a more accurate take on that mic than even the modern C414. Besides, it looks like something off the Death Star.

I have a feeling that a full production tracked through these will sound more substantial and punchier than what I've been using thus far - I'm happy with it. Tons of clean output, but there's also room to get them to break up a little if you so choose. I've spent very little time working with it but so fa I'm impressed - things sound a little more "solid," the low end is less murky than the (excellent, to be fair) preamps in my Apogee Ensemble, and the high end is a little silkier. I've barely gotten a feel for them (I spent most of my time experimenting with the BAE with mics I already own for a familiar reference) but riight off the bat a hastily positioned stereo pair was one of the best recordings of my acoustic I've ever managed.Īnd before anyone asks, I have no clue if it djents.īAE makes extremely high-quality replicas of Neve 1073 preamps. But I think these are pretty cool.īAE makes extremely high quality replicas of Neve 1073 preamps. And, considering how heavy this board is into amp modeling and direct recording I expect a lot of "not a single f*ck was given" lack of responses. No pictures since I'm at work, and technically these came in maybe a week ago.
